South Asians in Hong Kong help the Sichuan Survivors



The earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale destroyed an extensive area in Sichuan Province and left hundreds of survivors who lost their families members and homes. This tragic issue also touched the hearts of those who are from South Asia and living in Hong Kong. The South Asians consider those affected are their brothers and sisters and would like to render their support to them.



This group of South Asians, including Heavenly Path Hong Kong and Gurkhas Security Guards Union Hong Kong, raised HK$4,486.10 and would like to donate these money to The Salvation Army for helping those suffering in SiChuan. South Asian volunteers from the Southern democratic Alliance have also prepared some bracelets made with 5 colour gifts for the survivors. James Lung Wai Man, the Chairman of the Southern Democratic Alliance hopes that as a gift indicating that when the people of Sichuan suffers, people allover the world with different colour of skins would support.


Mr. Lama Prem, Treasurer of Gurkhas Security Guards Union Hong Kong, attended the cheque presentation yesterday (9 June) said that they could not raised a big sum of money as most of the South Asians in Hong Kong are not the rich people but they still would like to be partner with the people of Hong Kong to help those survivors of the SiChuan earthquake.



Mr. Rai Bal Kumar, President of Heavenly Path Hong Kong, also thanked The Salvation Army for their work in Sichuan and was glad to know that the fund will meet the urgent needs of the survivors.



Mr. Lama and Mr. Rai both stressed that their souls and hearts were with those who are suffering in SiChuan.



Lieut Colonel Merv Rowland, Officer Commanding of The Salvation Army, thanked the South Asians for their trust on The Salvation Army and believed that the 5 colour gifts will certainly encourage the people in SiChuan when they are in difficulties.



The Salvation Army will take the donations and the gifts to Sichuan on Tuesday 10th June.
